    Galactic Party to Celebrate 100 Movie Nites

    PLEASE NOTE: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this event has been POSTPONED, new date tbd.

    Come help us celebrate our 100th Movie Nite with a big congregational bash, featuring a screening of the immortal comic sci fi masterpiece, Galaxy Quest (1999).

    Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman & Tony Shalhoub star in one of the funniest films of all time: a witty and affectionate send-up of Star Trek & sci-fi cons, brilliantly written, chock-full of wonderful gags & immortal lines. Guests are encouraged (but certainly not required) to come in costume. Creatively themed light refreshments (with nonalcoholic beverages) will be served.  After the movie, linger & help us polish off the refreshments.

    For those of you who were not around in 2005, sci fi was the theme of our first Movie Nite series, and we had so much fun that first year that we added Galaxy Quest to our series that summer.

    Movie Nites – Burn After Reading

    (2008; Joel & Ethan Coen); Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, George Clooney, John Malkovich head a star cast. Gym employee denied adequate health insurance concocts a bizarre scheme to raise money for a body lift; the inanity of the conspirators as they bumble through their crimes is topped only by that of the federal agents trying to untangle the plot.     (1997, Barry Sonnenfeld; written by Lowell Cunningham & Ed Solomon). Tommy Lee Jones drafts Will Smith; together they battle an intergalactic alien bug intent on destroying the Earth. The action includes a host of ingeniously hilarious extraterrestrials – good, evil, or just plain silly (including a comic turn from Tony Shalhoub). Oscar for Best Makeup (obviously); a host of wins from the Academy of Sci Fi, Fantasy & Horror Films. Light snacks or appetizers will be served.     (1995, Tim Lasseter, Director and co-writer), voiced by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles & others. Not for kids only! The Pixar classic about toys that come to life when human backs are turned won an Oscar for Lasseter (Special Achievement), plus a host of other nominations & awards, including Best Score (Randy Newman) & Best Screenplay (a clutch of first-rate writers). The usual Guest troup (Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Fred Willard, Parker Posey) are recruited by the hapless Corky (Guest himself) to perform in his musical about their small Missouri town. Aspirations & egos blossom with the rumor that a New York theatre critic will attend; we all somehow know where THAT will lead! Light snacks or appetizers will be served.     Movie Nites – When Harry Met Sally

    (1989, Rob Reiner, written by Nora Ephrom – Oscar, Best Screenplay). The classic progenitor of “You’ve Got Mail” & “Sleepless in Seattle;” the most hilariously ascerbic of them all. College grad Sally (Meg Ryan) is drafted by a female friend to drive her boyfriend Harry (Billy Crystal) to New York. They take an immediate dislike to each other but gradually become friends. Will it become even more?

    Famous for its immortal restaurant scene: “I’ll have what she’s having.”

    Movie Nites 100th Film – Airplane!

    (1980, Abrahams, Zucker & Zucker) Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielson, & a host of cameos. An unremittingly laugh-out-loud-hilarious spoof of disaster movies & nearly every other cinematic genre. Fasten your seat belt, because otherwise you’re gonna fall right out of your chair.

Oscars for Cher (Best Actress), Dukakis (Best Supporting Actress), & John Patrick Shanely (Best Original Screenplay). The classic big Italian-American love story set in Brooklyn; steeped in family, opera, food, tragedy, passion & laughter. Larger than life performances, delivered with such sensitivity & honesty that that the audience is swept along as the plot accelerates. Light snacks or appetizers will be served.
